In 1984, after completion of his 18 years as a senior officer of the body guards at the blue house in Korea, Do Ju Nim Ji, Han Jae emigrated to the United States. The integration of mental and spiritual techniques of his style differed substantially from the original "Hapkido", therefore, he changed the name of his style to "Sin Moo Hapkido".
He combined his knowledge from different martial arts styles from the Korean, Chinese, and the Japanese. It is a comprehensive Korean martial art which combines the soft styles of Aikido, Kung-Fu and Judo along with the hard styles of Korean punching and kicking techniques. The Sin Moo Hapkido system was supplemented by the Taoist methods of the spirit training as well as the breathing and meditation exercises. Further, the mental and spiritual techniques from various buddhist instructors were added. The roots of the combat styles and philosophies mentioned can be retraced over many centuries.
Sin Moo Hapkido is a pure self-defense martial art which consists of joint-locks, throws, punching, kicking and counter techniques for defense in all distances (short, middle and far distance, sitting, lying, etc.). Also includes weapon training (knife, sword, short and long stick, cane, umbrella, rope, towel, handkerchief, fan etc.). Through diversion and fixation techniques, as well by mental influence and nerve pressure point techniques opposing attacks are brought under control.
Sin Moo Hapkido emphasize greater internal training and strength. This is reached through Dan Jun breathing and meditation training. Because strength is not a crucial factor, Hapkido lends itself to people of all ages and both sexes.
Si Moo Hapkido teaches a way to get physically, mentally and spiritually strengthened to improve the fitness and health and be more efficient and active in one's life.
The entire meaning of Sin Moo Hapkido is "harmony and coordination between the mind, body and spirit". It brings harmony to oneself by combining the physical and the spiritual energies.
In contrary to belief that martial arts training will encourage violence or aggression, the physical improvement and mental well being will promote healthy and strong self confidence and self esteem at home, work and school. It will encourage a person to become more controllable and more at ease with the difficulties of the everyday life and to evade explosive and dangerous situations. The discipline of martial arts affects itself positively in the character of human beings.
